I know there is still some new v1 out there. I got a few unopened, new in box, WRT160N v1 and I just put one on ebay.

I wonder if the v3 can be supported before the v2. |

* The CPU is an RT2880F which is a MIPS4Kec, reported by the manufacturer to operate at 266 MHz. Interestingly, default linux kernel from linksys/cisco says it's 133 MHz.
* My board has two WinBond W9864G6IH 64Mbit SDRAMS. Each chip is 1MB x 4 BANKS x 16 BITS for a total of 64 MBits per chip, or 128 MBits total = 16 megabytes. Many have reported it's only 4MB; that doesn't appear to be accurate.
* The flash chip was reported by the OpenWRT wiki as being a Samsung chip, however the unit I'm looking at uses an EON Silicon EN29LV320AB, which is 32 megabits, or 4 megabytes. This is the same as a WRT54GL.
So, from what I'm looking at here, I don't see any fatal problems in getting it up and running. The wireless part is unknown to me.
Everybody is complaining about this hardware, but I don't really see what's so horrible about it. Yeah, I'd be happy if it had twice as much flash/ram. Furthermore, the code that Cisco released to meet their GPL obligations should have pretty much all the information needed to get it up and running at least for the basics, yes?
With regard to Cisco hating the hardware... My guess is that they switched to this chipset because of a supplier problem, and now they're switching back. I don't necessarily know that it means that the hardware is a P.O.S.

What I think happened is that linksys didn't do so hot with the stability in thier firmware for this router, hence all the hate for it. On paper, it's not bad hardware, but you need good software to make the good hardware work. |
