Chapter 41 begins with “familia,” which means “family.” Maxine invites Jade to her family dinner one Sunday. She says they call it Soul Food Sunday. Maxine's family, including her sister Mia, welcome Jade. Jade quickly feels that Maxine is trying to keep Jade from talking for fear she will say something to embarrass Maxine. The family discusses plans for their summer vacation and rehash the high points of their winter trip. Maxine's brother Nathan announces that he and his wife are expecting a baby, and that monopolizes the conversation from that point. Jade uses the wrong fork and Maxine points it out, but Nathan uses the wrong fork on purpose in an effort to smooth over the situation. After that, Jade watches Maxine.
